BECA Lunch 7th September 2012 At the Elstead Hotel Knyventon Road Stanley is above all a West Countryman. He was born in Cornwall in August 1940, and educated at Ravenswood School, near Tiverton, Devon, Sherborne School, Dorset and Exeter College, Oxford, where he won a Stapeldon Scholarship in Classics. Since 1951 his family has farmed on Exmoor, on the Devon-Somerset border, and Stanley still manages the farm there today.

They came to Britain as students in the 1960s, studied hard and encouraged me to do the same. At age thirteen, I was very fortunate to win a scholarship to Eton College. After finishing there, I read history at Trinity College, Cambridge, where I earned Bachelor and PhD degrees in British History, and was part of the series-winning team on University Challenge.
